heat pump

  • apparatus that extracts heat from a liquid that is at a higher temperature than its surroundings; can be used to transfer heat from a reservoir outside in order to heat a building
  • A heat pump is a machine or device that moves heat from one location (the ‘source’) at a lower temperature to another location (the ‘sink’ or ‘heat sink’) at a higher temperature using mechanical work or a high-temperature heat source.
  • A device that transfers heat from a colder area to a hotter area by using mechanical energy, as in a refrigerator
  • (Heat pumps) Heat pumps use heat from either the ground or the outside air to heat a building. Ground- and Air- source heat pumps are not completely ‘renewable’ as they require electricity to drive their pumps or compressors.

Photo of 1940s' pump, Pickens County, Ala
Remember when I described t-h-i-s stretch of Ala. Hwy. 17 (again, from Mobile-to-Florence/Muscle Shoals, more-or-less)…and the economic circumstances for hundreds of miles along Ala. 17? Recall how I summarized—wait a second—for m-e, that’s a laugh! (I can’t summarize anything on even a kindergartener’s English-level…say, Kraft/Gen. Foods commercial…to save my life….)

Anyway: Remember when I hinted at the "Face in the Courthouse-Window" legend, within Carrollton—which lies just West of this pump’s abandoned shack—and how I’m h-o-p-i-n-g that said Legend m-i-g-h-t generate, you know…tourism-income? Recall when I mentioned that Pickens County’s infrastructure—really, that of a-n-y Deep South county and small-town—b-a-d-l-y needs such tourists’ dollars? And sales-taxes? Well, West Central Ala’s SNAP-eligible, hard-core under-employed people—need such dollars even m-o-r-e, obviously.

Now, now…before a-n-y Flickr members b-l-a-s-t my choice of words (hey, I vote for Democrats and/or or Green Party candidates!): Most American still call "S.N.A.P." program "Food Stamps." As to motive underneath my choice of adjective, "hard-core": I merely meant rural Black-Belt’s cir-cum-stances. Never, EH-ver meant "fatherlessness," "youth-gangs," single-parents who are "too stoned or drunk to look for inner-city jobs," &c., &c. Far from "hard-core-ness" being United-Way-type families’ o-w-n faults (in pockets of r-u-r-a-l poverty)—there simply aren’t too many job-openings to even s-t-a-r-t with. And even f-e-w-e-r factories…. (For instance: Drive down that Hwy. 17, and you’ll pass Pickens Co’s empty skeleton of one-time light-bulb factory…its peeling "Westinghouse" sign still does sentry-guard duty. More from this N.W. Ala. graphic-designer, about their logo-designer—the late Paul Rand, of Am. Broadcasting Co. fame—underneath another one of my photos.)

Black-Belt soil i-s still fertile enough to feed & clothe m-i-l-l-i-o-n-s of Americans. But to-day–perhaps 70%-to-90% of those riverside acres are owned by the following: (A.) Absentee land-owners. (B.) Lumber-companies. Rolling plains which once grew cotton, tobacco, cattle, poultry, &c…often grow pine-forests, nowadays. (C.)Food-processing conglomerates. Process began when Ever since those plantation-owners’ family-heirs began to sell their lands…and allow those once-remarkable mansions to decay. (Pro-ba-bly around time when United Artists released Norman Jewison’s powerful "In the Heat of the Night," 1967.) And m-o-s-t of those wealthy, powerful absentees—amassed, constitute one big, black hole—into which U.S.D.A. ladles HUN-dred$ of million$ of needless "farm-subsidies"—almost all wasted, never to return. Think how MA-ny public schools & comm. colleges within Deep South/Black Belt (a-n-d on m-o-s-t Am. Indian reservations) m-i-g-h-t become globally-competitive with all those taxpayers’ millions…might e-v-e-n attract some of N. America’s best-qualified teachers. Or even allow after-school programs for kids & teens who are n-o-t "into" marching-bands & varsity-sports. Or—imagine how many Black-owned, income-generating cooperatives, say…or Israeli-style, kibbutz-type communities…or Small-Business Adm. projects! But—sh***t, why ought’a Congress (lit’ alone Sens. RIch-uhdd Shelby an’ Jeff Sessions) even "invest," in sech Fedd’ll deh-fissit boondoggles? Mick’ll Shepherd’s jes’ a Pinko
Commy-nisst, jes’ lak hizz Yew-nited Methy-diss’ bishops & cohnn’f’nnces. (Ahn us REEALL Chriss-chuhnns STILL ain’ foh-giv’nn Roz-lynn an’ Jimmy Cah-rrter….)

Seriously…have any Flickr members guessed this pump’s (1.) brand of gasoline, and (2.)original manufacturer? Would v-e-r-y much appreciate a-n-y "leads" about pump-restorer, flea-market, antique-mall, &c., who has two/three-inch, brass d-i-s-c for sale/trade. Thank you in advance for replies!
